Spring Package Bees 2008

I have been bringing in package bees for 15 years uneventful with zero losses from CA, will do so again this spring for myself and others. This year unlike in some years past my supplier will supply 4 pound packages along with my usual 3 pound packages. In recent years I have been sending to California in the fall my own breeder queens (Presently I have 2 breeders in California, bred from my best wintered colonies for him to graft daughters from to supply those packages I get for myself and others wanting to take advantage of genetics developed up here to continue improving these genetics. The drones of these daughters will be 100 percent Alaska developed genetics considering that they do not have a father only grandfathers, (virtually genetic copies of the queen laying the unfertilized eggs they develop from) remember the breeders I send to California were mated up here so there daughters are a product of the mating the summer of 2006 here in Alaska. It is the Drones from these daughters I am ultimately seeking in my breeding program. The daughters need to go through at least one winter before I consider breeding from them. This method of sending queens south for a return of their daughters is a way for me and others to enhance a breeding program, instead of constantly bringing in unknown or untested genetics. Not saying it is wrong to test new stock.

So this year I can supply two strains, not including my Alaskan line, I am shotting for next season now to supply the AHB (Alaska Honey Bee);

       1.  "Alaska Hardy" http://balder.prohosting.com/~starrier/akhb2004.html (I am the sole distributor of these queens from the supplier). This strain is currently unavailable.

       2. Italians

       3. "New World Carniolans", http://www174.pair.com/birdland/Breeding/NWC.html

My supplier is Shamrock Pollination Services Inc, Third generation beekeeping family, they operate and run over 12,000 colonies.

      1. 3 lb PK+Q = $90.00

      2. 4 lb PK+Q = $113.00

      3. Additional queens are $20.00
